Numeracy

Miss St John is a NZ Graduate School Intern who is working in our team at the moment.  She is teaching a group of our learners at numeracy time.  They were working on adding groups of equipment together, using the context of garages and cars.  It can be a bit tricky sometimes to realise that the same numbers of cars can be there altogether even though they are in two places.

Assembly 4th March

Well done to Devante for receiving a certificate in assembly today for showing out school values, and being a Burnside Primary Shining Star. Tian Xi started last week in our team and received a welcome certificate today.

Making Good Choices

During Hui time today we discussed what good choices look like in Piwakawaka. 
We had some pictures and we had to spot when the children were making a good choice. Some of these included when the children were packing up, giving 5 and being a good friend. 
After that, Mrs Ibell and Mrs Shamy-Brown used some puppets to role play different situations which might happen during our school day. We then had to help the puppets make a good choice in the particular situation. 
At the end of Numeracy time, some children were spotted making good choices. Can you see what their good choice was?

Calendar pattern - February

We have a calendar in the Red Room community space.  Every morning we look at the days of the week - finding out what day it is, what day it was yesterday and what day it will be tomorrow.  We also look at the numbers that make up the date, what the month is called and the Maori names for each of these things.  We also make some shape patterns that grow throughout the month.  We have to say the colour and the shape to describe what comes 'next' in the pattern.

This is the pattern for February.  We wonder what pattern we will make in March...maybe it will get trickier!

Numeracy learning

This week we have been learning that we don't have to count the materials, especially when we are working with the same number of items that have been separated into two group.  To check our learning, we have been trying to count on from the biggest number using tens frames in our heads.

We have also been making up number stories about frogs and tadpoles and telling our numeracy buddies.

Cyrus and Tian Xi have really enjoyed using our Morphun blocks to make some new creations this week.  They have other great shapes to use and connect using little rods that slide into groves.

Circles Numeracy Group

The circles numeracy group are learning how to count to 10 and to find the matching number.  We have been using our love of caterpillars and playdough this week to help us with our learning.

We rolled balls of green playdough to make caterpillars.  We then had to count how many balls we had made and find out who had the longest caterpillar.  

We then helped each other to find the number on the number line.  We pointed to each number and counted along the number line to find the number that matched our caterpillars.

This activity also helped us to develop our fine motor skills as our fingers and hands were doing a lot of work with the playdough.

Te Waka o Matariki - Numbers to 10

Some of us are learning how to recognise the numbers to 10.  We used our interest in caterpillars to find the numbers and order them to 10.  We worked together to find the numbers and then put the caterpillar together individually.
